Director Development & Communications

 

At Commonland, we work with local partners around the world to turn degraded and poorly managed landscapes into thriving ecosystems, economies and communities. We are currently in a phase of scaling up our effort, and are looking to broaden our funder base. We want to move from relying mainly on philanthropists to blending a variety of funding sources – impact investors and government subsidies – to finance the restoration of “our” existing and new landscapes. We are looking for a candidate with broad experience in programme finance, who can support us in developing and implementing a strategy and building a team to tap into these funding sources. Commonland is seeking a Director Development & Communications who will be responsible for developing and executing a professional fund mobilization strategy for different sectors such as philanthropy, investors, governments and business.

 

We work with blended funding streams of subsidies, philanthropy, loans and investments. The team Development & Communications focuses on raising funds and subsidies as part of the finance overview per landscape, and aligns all marketing and communication activities within Commonland to achieve our strategic goals.

 

Our ideal candidate has a proven fundraising track record in managing the development and implementation of a strategic, integrated, and collaborative approach to maximise success. You have an extensive international network with major donors, foundations and corporations and is capable of leading multiple Development & Communication processes with targeted fundraising goals. You know how to convert content into a good story and establish long-term funding relationships with existing and new partners. You lead by example and enjoy coaching your team to get the best possible result.

 

The Ideal candidate

  • You have proven track record in fundraising, marketing and communications and you are able to use this for writing compelling stories and funding proposals;
  • You have a strong affinity with Commonland’s mission and vision and enjoy working in an innovative creative expert organisation with a holistic mindset;
  • You enjoy making connections, and talk easily to the president of a country as to any other person;
  • You live in the Netherlands, preferably near Amsterdam, or are willing to relocate;
  • You possess outstanding writing and verbal skills in English, and preferably in Dutch and Spanish;
  • You display courage and confidence in building long-term relationships and have excellent interpersonal skills.

 

Your responsibilities:

Managing the fund mobilization and marketing & communications team and you are a part of our Management Team;

Responsible and accountable for meeting strategic goals and objectives;

Accountable for development, communications, media relations and fund mobilization (up to €10 million a year);

Further develop a professional fund mobilization strategy, retention and professional development and establishing clear directions for the team;

Develop and administer budget, partnership and fundraising objectives, evaluate results and develops corrective strategies as needed;

Search for new major funders and maintain our existing funds in line with the overall strategy;

Develop and implement a strategy for growth of the individual and corporate supporter base, and build a large personal and business network that leads to fundraising opportunities;

In all aspects of your work, you are an ambassador for the organisation;

You will work closely with, and proactively support and advise the CEO in building and maintaining relationships based on agreed goals and strategies.
